Venkatesh in Kamal's Marmayogi?

These days, unusual combinations are happening in South Indian film industry. Actors from Tamil and Telugu are pairing together to get a wider reach. The biggest of all combinations is Kamal Haasan and Venkatesh. Yes, you read it right. Our Telugu top hero Venky has reportedly agreed to play a very crucial and important role in Kamal Haasan’s magnum opus Marmayogi to be launched very soon.

When Kamal approached Venky and narrated the story, Venkatesh immediately agreed to do it. Marmayogi is directed by Kamal and produced by Pyramid Saimira.

Trisha and Shriya are acting in the movie which is a period flick. Venky who always said that he is open to do multi-starrer movies provided the script is right is looking forward to Kamal’s Marmayogi. Currently, he is mulling over to cater dates for it.

Superstar ventures into new galaxy

As one drives through the serpentine Road No 46 in the upmarket Jubilee Hills in Hyderabad, a swanky corporate structure standing at the top of the street brings one to a natural halt, surrounded as it is by an eager but patient crowd waiting for “the star” to smile upon them.

The scene instantly reminds one of a film shoot. In fact, much like a film set, the quintessential 21st century office came up in just 40 days. But what is unfolding inside is not exactly filmi. Though the central character remains a film star — Chiranjeevi, who spent three decades in Tollywood — the script being drafted is political and the hero and his lieutenants believe it is certain to change the politics of Andhra Pradesh.

A pin-up board in one of the rooms has clippings from various newspapers of the day. One report describes how he lost his cool when fans blocked his way, another links the outburst to his unhappiness at the insignificant number of seasoned leaders joining his party. Yet another clipping from a vernacular reports that fans want him to hit the road sooner than later.

In the conference hall, a sizeable gathering awaits the leader’s return from lunch. One of them happens to be a technocrat from Harvard who wants to sell software to the new party.

The same software, the technocrat tells an NRI in the Chiru camp, was sold to Barack Obama for conducting a socio-economic survey in the US. He explains how it would be useful to Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam.

Nearby, as we chit chat in the board room sipping hot coffee, the man of the moment — Chiranjeevi — arrives to engage us in a freewheeling conversation for the next 45 minutes.

Understandably, to most questions, he tries to relate his replies to his experience in the film world. “I am pretty relaxed,’’ he says in his opening remarks on how he feels in his new role as a political leader.

While in the film industry he had to depend on his own resources, now he is more comfortable because there are quite a few friends who share his ideology and thoughts and are willing to hone them into policy programmes that can be implemented. “They provide me a lot of cushion and with the support I am getting from the people, I am confident of reaching the goal,” he avers.

The actor-turned-politician does not hesitate to concede that the decision to switch roles was a long drawn out process. Did he spend sleepless nights? “Not exactly. But for months I used to get up early in the morning and spend time alone in my room wondering how to respond to suggestions that I should enter politics,” he recalls.

Many told him that the people of the state gave him all that anyone could aspire for as an actor and it was time he repaid the debt.

He goes on: “There are many who have charisma but how many will receive the encouragement that I have to go forward?” After all, even if he had continued in films, he would have done a couple more movies before deciding to call it a day. But if he did that he would have wasted a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take up a bigger cause, more so because he believes he has the capacity to change lives for the better. That, finally, persuaded him to take the plunge.

But what about his on-screen and off-screen image? Having played characters that reflected a lot of aggression, what Chiranjeevi has shown in the month since he launched his party is a goody-goody and soft side. But he feels it is a perfectly okay approach. “I don’t think you need to be necessarily aggressive to connect to the people. On the contrary, I believe that if you show intensity in what you say, you will be able to strike a chord in their hearts.” From the angry hero in films, will the state now see an angry young politician (at 52, he is young by Indian standards) who is out to change society? He laughs heartily. “I may not portray myself as an angry politician but I am sure people will appreciate my honesty and commitment to change the way politics is pursued,” emphasising that curbing corruption and ensuring that a major chunk of the benefits go to the identified beneficiaries would be his top priority.

The Praja Rajyam founder also argues that there is nothing wrong when he keeps saying that he would try to do the same things that are being done now but in a different manner.

“Take the case of social welfare and girls hostels.

We have a lot of them even now, but the inmates suffer from lack of dining facility, toilets and a proper place to sleep. We may not be able to provide them dining tables but we can certainly give them economical cement platforms to have their food. Likewise, ensuring a mattress to sleep is not difficult. All that is required is sincerity in approach. You don’t have to necessarily change the system. If the leader sets an example, the rest will follow in great measure,” he explains.

Unconsciously, he again goes back to his past world to relate how he changed the way a hero performs dance sequences. The number of songs in a movie remained the same as before even after he joined films, but what he did do was to bring about a distinct change in the way they were played out to the audiences and they became a runaway trend-setter.

Chiranjeevi has no doubt that his lack of experience in politics will not work against him. On the contrary, it may be an advantage.

Take the case of Ram Gopal Verma, who was looked down upon as a rookie when he first wanted to direct a film or a Sekhar Kammula, an NRI who returned to the country and got into film-making, he points out and says, “They had never worked with anybody. But when they did their first movies, they were lapped up by people who liked their refreshingly fresh approach”.

Though he is only a month-old as a politician Chiranjeevi says he has stopped thinking about his past. His thoughts are not going back to the sets, trolleys and the frequent shouts of lights, action...camera… from the director. He was used to working 18 hours a day while making films and, therefore, does not find it difficult to spend 12 to 14 hours in the party office handling various tasks — meeting newcomers, discussing policies with the think-tank (they are still taking shape) and catching up with the media.

Comparisons may not always be right but Chiranjeevi has to live with the manner in which he is compared with the Telugu film giant, NT Rama Rao, who launched the Telugu Desam 25 years ago and changed the course of politics in the state.

“N T Rama Rao was, no doubt, a strongwilled person but when it comes to determination I am no less,” he says recalling that even when NTR launched Telugu Desam, support did not come overnight. At that time, people thought they had no option but to live under a Congress regime. But when the alternative came along, they looked at it and soon it turned into a groundswell of support. Likewise, his heart tells him that people are once again looking for a change from the two principal parties — ruling Congress and Telugu Desam.

Youth have, of course, attended his maiden meeting in Tirupati in large numbers and been coming to him on a daily basis.

“Others like women or farmers may not express themselves the same way. But, I am sure they too would lend support once I hit the road later this month,” he says in a voice oozing confidence, before signing off to meet others waiting for him.

ANR – The Godfather of Telugu cinema's birthday

Akkineni Nageswara Rao is a niche for the title godfather of Telugu cinema who prevails in the industry since almost the first talkie made in Telugu. Being an encyclopedia of Telugu cinema, the veteran actor celebrates his birthday on September 20th.

Akkineni Nageswara Rao can aptly be referred to as the god father as he is the man behind the relocation of Telugu industry to Hyderabad from Chennai. It was undertaken in an attempt to make movies in the native and bring Telugu cinema to lime light. On seeing deterioration in the number of films made, he started his own production house Annapurna Studios to bolster the industry.

The era is even referred to as the akkineni era in which he gave a new dimension by introducing the concept of dance in the films and captivated the audience with his foot taps. He has played hero for a whooping number of 254 films. He made his debut venture as a lead in 1944 and continues to act in the recent 'Sriramadasu' which was released in 2007. Exaggeration is not the word that could be used if said there is a single role left untouched by the thespian.

'Devdas' performed by Akkineni Nageswara Rao is a mile stone in his career which is being remembered for ages. The movie was restated by adept actors Saigal, Dilip Kumar and Sivaji Ganesan in their respective languages yet they confessed their inability to portray a slick performance as the former. The era didn't conclude with 'Devdas' but continued in 'Laila Majnu' as a jinxed lover, a keen devotee in 'Vipranarayana, Bhakta Jayadeva' and the likes.

Nageswara Rao was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his life time contribution to the Indian cinema. He is also the recipient of the Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri awards. The laurelled actor is a boon to the industry for his contribution paved way for the Telugu industry which now serves as the home for a plethora of technicians and artists.

India Glitz wishes many more happy returns of the day to the thespian Akkineni Nageswara Rao on his birthday.

‘KSR’ audio launch on Sept 18

Srikanth, Charmme and Gouri Munjal are playing the lead in ‘Kausalya Supraja Rama’ produced by Dr D Ramanaidu on the banner of Suresh Productions introducing Surya Prasad as director. The film is being brought out as a complete family entertainer. MM Srilekha scored tunes for the movie and the producer is planning to launch the audio of the film on September 18. Director says, ‘Our film would create a new trend and we are confident that the attempt of Dr D Ramanaidu to bag a hit for his banner Suresh Productions would be a success.’ The producer is making efforts to release the film in October as a Dasara gift. It is worth mentioning here that a part of the film was shot in the newly built Ramanaidu Studios in Visakhapatnam, which was inaugurated by Chief Minister YS Rajasekhar Reddy recently. Sivaji is playing another important role in the flick.

‘Keka’ music launch on Sept 20
Director Teja earned a distinction and proved that he is different from others by bringing out films with novices right from ‘Chitram’ to ‘Oka Vichitram’. Director Teja bagged several hits on his banner ‘Chitram Movies’. As he had no notable hits in the recent past to his credit, he had decided to follow his old principle and brought out a film ‘Keka’ with all new faces in the star cast. In fact, Teja wielded the megaphone after a gap of two long years. Chakri scored music for the movie and the audio is slated for launch on September 20. Moreover, Teja came out from his routine style of making completely and made the film completely based on screenplay. He is now making efforts to release the movie in the first week of October.

‘Hero’ audio to hit stands by Sept-end
Popular villain and character artiste GV is turning a director through ‘Hero’ produced by Manyam Ramesh with Nithin as hero and Bhavana as heroine. The shooting of the film is almost complete. Manisharma gave lilting tunes to all the songs and the producer is planning to release the audio in the third week of September. At the same time, Manyam Ramesh is also making efforts to release the film in October. Nithin says, ‘After the blockbuster like ‘Sye’ in my career, the director brought out my character and the film in a very stylish manner.’ Producer says, ‘Bhavana is playing heroine in a Telugu film after making her debut appearance in ‘Ontari’. We are sure that she would become a busy heroine in Telugu after the release of this movie.’ It may be mentioned here that Mega Star Chiranjeevi earlier played hero in a film with similar title. Now the Mega Brother Nagababu is playing a special and main character in this flick.

Naveen Vadde’s ‘One’ audio launched
After a long gap, Naveen Vadde is coming up before the Telugu audiences with a different title for his film called ‘One’. Krishna Teja is directing the film while Nalla Charan Reddy is producing the flick and Sri Vasanth gave melodious tunes to all the songs. The audio of the film was launched at Prasad Labs amidst several popular film personalities. Popular business tycoon, Ramesh Prasad of Prasad’s I-Max released the audio. Speaking at the function, music director MM Keeravani says, ‘We are marketing the audio through our home unit ‘Vel’ records. One thing I realised in recent times that the novice music directors are giving excellent music for the movies. Same thing happened for this film too. I heartfully wish that Naveen would get the adequate break as hero again with this movie.’ The producer is making efforts to release the film in October.

‘Raksha’ to hit screen on Sept. 19
It is well aware that Ram Gopal Varma bagged a hit with a thriller and horror film ‘Phoonk’ based on black magic and the film earned a big talk in Bollywood. Ram Gopal Varma remade the film in Telugu as ‘Raksha’ introducing Vamsikrishna Akella as director on the banner of One More Entertainment, as Ramu liked the subject very much. Though there are similarities in the storyline, the taking, screenplay and the movement of the film would be different from each other. Jagapatibabu, Kalyani, Baby Neha, Pradeep Rawat and Subbaraju played the lead roles in the movie. Director Vamsikrishna says, ‘I will terrorise and thrill the Telugu audiences with this movie.’ The presenter is making efforts to release the film on September 19.

"I don't think I have a sensibility to make a Telugu Film" – Ram Gopal Varma

Named as a sensational director with his very first film ''Siva'' (1989) made in Telugu & Hindi, Ram Gopal Varma made his entry into Bollywood with ''Rangeela'' and went unabated to make touted films like ''Sarkar'' & ''Sarkar Raj'' with the ''Big B'' Amitabh Bachchan himself. After stepping in to Bollywood, he started his own production company named Varma Corporation Ltd that later became a Factory to produce films like products in an Industry. This production house created opportunities for many aspiring directors, artists and technicians.

Varma wrote, directed and produced manifold genres of films. His latest film that became a blockbuster is ''Phoonk'' in Hindi is a supernatural thriller based on black-magic. He then made the Telugu film ''Raksha'' on the same amiable vein, debuting Vamsi Krishna Akella as the director. This horror/thriller having Jagapatibabu and Kalyani in the lead with Baby Neha in the main role is being released tommorow on 19th. On this occasion indiaglitz.com had a chit chat with RGV…

What made you to select black magic as a theme for 'Raksha'?
Twenty years back, I was very much impressed with the film 'Tulasi Dalam' which was based on Yandamuri Veerendranath's novel. Again recently 8-10 months ago, I observed on IndiaTV that many programmes were relayed based on this subject. I felt that even in times like 2008, people show curiosity in such subjects. With this impression in mind, I started a search for the story writer, and Vamsi was recommended by an anonymous source. Later when we started writing the story for 'Phoonk', I was impressed with his visualization, clarity and sincerity towards work. I told him that "I shall make 'Phoonk' in Hindi, and you direct 'Raksha' in Telugu". This is the backstage footage before incarnating 'Raksha'.

What are the variations between 'Phoonk' and 'Raksha'?
To illustrate the subject, black magic is commonly believed to be something used to kill or harm the enemies. A good amount of people believe in this and some don't. The hero of this film rebuffs such superstitions abruptly. His daughter is affected by an unnamed source. People say it is a kind of black magic (Chethabadi). Others who don't believe in this, like the hero and doctors who treat the child will not be able to explain what exactly has happened to her. In such a critical circumstance, the hero's attempt and mode to save his child forms this film. Coming to the differences in 'Phoonk' and 'Raksha' – In Vamshi's turn the quality, characterization and sequences are all made in his distinguished style that stands apart. If you watch the film and ponder over the story it will appears similar. However, Vamshi's treatment is very different from mine, and I honestly feel it is delivered better than I felt.

Did you make 'Phoonk' or 'Raksha' to convey that superstitions still exist?
I didn't intend to inculcate superstition or to prove the existence of black-magic by rendering this movie. That is completely not the crux or target of this project. Like, some people believe in superstitions and others do not, a dated conflict still exists between these beliefs. I personally do not believe in this (black magic), however, if someone comes to me and tells that such and such a thing has happened to him, and if I know nothing about it, then its not correct to rule it out completely, this is how I feel. So - It is a superstition until it happens to you, is the core point of the film.

When a popular director makes such films, does it not influence the viewers?
I don't believe that viewers will be influence by a cinema. For example, after the film 'Hum Apke Hai Kaun' we did not see a growth in joint families. If we ask - what came out first the plant or the seed, they will be tongue tied and no one can answer such a question. The belief in black magic is existent since 100's of years and will prevail for sure in the future. Cinema is almost made only by a single journalist. This is an inspiration not a direct statement it is a mirrored reflection sliced from a part of our real life.

What inspired you to make these kind of films?
'Axiologist' was made 30 years ago and 'Tulasi Dalam' was made 20 years ago. And now we made 'Raksha', similarly tomorrow or perhaps 20 years from now some one might make a film inspired by the same subject. So, everyone is adapting the topic of 'Axiologist'. Black magic (Chethabadi) was existent even before 'Axiologist' and will prevail after 'Raksha'. Films are just making a cut at regular intervals in time according to the mindset of the people living in that particular generation.

What is the reason behind your interest in horror films?
It is not a true statement that my keen interest is in horror films. I made 'Siva' it on students' violence; 'Kshana Kshanam' is a keeper film; 'Money' is a comedy entertainer; 'Raatri' is a horror flick; 'Sarkar' is a political drama; 'Rangeela' is a musical movie; As a whole to speak, I have made all genres of films. Just the hard hitting nature and intensity of this kind of films will stay in the minds of people. Hence, it makes you to think that I mostly make horror films. My last horror film was 'Bhoot' is made in 2002, and now in 2008, so it's been 6 years since I made a horror film.

Usually every film you make in Hindi will be dubbed into Telugu. What is the reason for making 'Raksha' specially in Telugu.
When a film is hit a remake is made instantly. The remake will carry the same story & effects. This is a type of way. Another method is the restating the original by making it again in the corresponding language. Vamsi made 'Raksha' with a different style and not like a remake. It is completely an original interpretation, in his own way as he envisaged the core of the subject. Quite a lot of changes have been made in his version, and I think it is a better make than my original.

What kind of film you are going to make next?
I have certain ideas to envision. I am still thinking about

When can we expect a new Telugu film from you?
I don't think I have the sensibility to make Telugu films.

Tinsel politics return in India

The advent of Chiranjeevi's Praja Rajyam (People's Rule) party in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh has reignited an old trend of Tollywood stars cashing in on personas to catapult themselves to power, with the 53-year-old actor only the latest in a long string of matinee idols to make a foray into politics.

Chiranjeevi's glittering entrance has prompted feverish speculation in Andhra over the possible impact his party will have on the ruling Congress and opposition Telugu Desam Party. Opinions vary over which will bear the brunt of the wildcard entry and optimistic commentators say the Chiranjeevi factor could lead to a defeat of ruling party and marginalization of the opposition.

Given the arithmetic of "vote banks", which fluctuate with caste and regional heterogeneity in Andhra Pradesh, and the widening of the fray due to Chiranjeevi's foray, it is also possible that next

year's state assembly elections could produce a hung assembly. Andhra may then become another Uttar Pradesh, the north Indian state where a triangulation of the political space has led to frequent expediential alliances for control of the chessboard.

Numbers aside, the advent of Praja Rajyam has not yet been analyzed in terms of its deeper significance for political participation and political efficacy, two main dimensions of India's democracy. The party claims that Chiranjeevi's charisma is attracting younger supporters all over Andhra, and will draw them into polling booths with unparalleled enthusiasm.

While this seems encouraging for democracy, the question remains as to why Indians need the lightning rod of a film star to increase their political participation. When there are traditionally low levels of civic consciousness and involvement in public issues, apathy could be shaken by an electrifying figure - exactly the kind of effect with which admirers credit Chiranjeevi.

But when civic crusaders in Andhra came together in 2006 to convert electoral watchdog Lok Satta into a political party, there was no comparable hysteria that it may embolden the people to demand better standards of governance. Despite Lok Satta's long and respectable track record of advocacy for raising voter awareness and integrity in public life, its reincarnation as a party was not portrayed in the media as a thunderbolt which would usher in a new era of clean politics.

The hoopla surrounding Praja Rajyam is thus a reminder of the deficiencies in India's political culture, where glitter and glamour get huge lifts from opinion makers at the cost of genuine parties which promise to reform the system.

A closer examination of Chiranjeevi's message is also a cause for concern, with his inaugural speech at the temple town of Tirupati Tirupati on August 26 showcasing a Praja Rajyam which will cast a wide net as a catch-all party. By simultaneously positioning himself as an opponent of special economic zones - as they displace the poor - and as a proponent of attracting rich investors, he sent mixed messages.

He also announced a wait-and-see approach towards the critical state-relevant issues of separatism in Telangana and affirmative action for downtrodden castes, revealing an opportunistic core.

Political parties in India are increasingly bereft of good campaign issues, and Praja Rajyam is a prime example. With no ideological cachet of his own, Chiranjeevi is attempting to ride his personal charm as a film star into the seat of power. The political arena can truly expand if newcomers offer something distinct and clearly identifiable by voters, yet Praja Rajyam shows no ideological clarity of its own, except for the banal declaration that his is a "party of social justice".

In a bygone era, doyen of popular cinema in Andhra Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, commonly known as NTR, generated waves of Telugu regional pride as he swept to power at the 1983 assembly elections, at a time when there were no strong regional parties in Andhra politics. The development of strong regional parties like NTR's, which catered to their respective linguistic states, was imperative if India's federalism was to survive and take root.

The extraordinary success of NTR achieved this goal and eventually also sowed the seeds for bi-partism in national politics, by providing an alternative to the hitherto permanent rule of the Congress in New Delhi.

Comparisons between NTR's storming of Andhra politics and Chiranjeevi's bid are being made ad nauseam these days, but it bears reminding that the former took on the mantle of public leadership long before his formal launch of Telugu Desam.

In 1952, NTR sensitized Telugu people to the plight of drought-prone Rayalaseeema and raised funds for relief supplies, a feat he repeated in 1977 for cyclone victims in Diviseema. During India's 1965 conflict with Pakistan, NTR was at the forefront of galvanizing the public in Andhra to donate to a central defense fund at a crucial juncture of the country's history.

NTR also enjoyed the unanimous backing of the Telugu film industry when he took stands for public causes. The goodwill and gratitude he earned in the movie trade over the course of his 300-odd-film career was unmatched, and a critical reservoir of support for Telugu Desam.

On all the above counts, Chiranjeevi fails to match NTR's achievements. The NTR-Chiranjeevi comparison illustrates that mere acclaim as an actor is neither necessary nor sufficient for winning elections or, more importantly, solving people's problems. Phenomena such as NTR and Maruthur Gopala Ramachandran Menon, the south Indian cinema colossus who was chief minister of Andhra's neighboring state Tamil Nadu for seven years, did capitalize on their magnetic screen presence - but also harnessed long years of civic engagement.

Sheer movie star power has never been enough to mesmerize the world public, and former US president and film star, Ronald Reagan earned his spurs as a progressive head of the Hollywood Screen Actors Guild in the 1930s at a time when exploitation of workers in the American film industry was de rigueur.

Action hero Arnold Schwarzenegger also had political affiliations with the Republican Party dating to 1968 before he became the governor of California. Former Philippine president and movie icon Joseph Estrada served as a mayor and senator for decades before he rose to his country's top political office.

Historian Ramachandra Guha argues that, compared to their Bollywood peers in the Hindi heartland, southern Indian film stars have a greater following and larger-than-life auras because they apotheosize unique sub-nationalisms and linguistic identities in the most multicultural country of the world. Chiranjeevi does not fit this bill because of the diluted ideology and vagueness of Praja Rajyam, which is emerging as neither fish nor fowl.

While fans of the actor have hailed his new starring role in politics, the overall implications of his arrival do not bode well for the theory and practice of democracy in India.

There’s a trailer on my phone

Innovation is the buzzword in movie promos today.

Take, for instance, the recent release, Rock On!!, which was publicised through live concerts. “When we were brainstorming on new ideas to promote the film, we came up with the idea of organising Rock On!! concerts across the country,” says director-turned-actor Farhan Akhtar, who made his on-screen debut with the movie. “We started with the film’s music release, which was followed by a series of concerts in Delhi, Mumbai and Pune,” he says, adding that out-of-the-box promos help a film stand out.

For his forthcoming movie, Ghajini, Aamir Khan is steering away from TV promos and going online. The actor reportedly wants a novel, user-friendly, interactive website for the film. He’s also considering a mobile phone website for the film, which will make Ghajini the first Hindi movie to have such a website.

Film-makers are also increasingly turning to Bluetooth-enabled film promotions. It works on the principle of ‘Catch them while on the move and run an end-to-end movie promo on the mobile’. Bluetooth marketing solutions company, Telibrama, is doing just that. After promoting the British movie Sucker Punch, the company is now pursuing the Tamil, Telugu and Hindi movie markets, pushing movie content at zero cost for the customer.

“This not only provides a richer media experience to the customer, but can be easily scaled up with more options like a fan club and feedback forms, which can always be added,” says Suresh Narasimha, CEO, Telibrama Communications. The company has provided Bluetooth-enabled display vans to promote Kannada films like Gaalipata and Taj Mahal.

Producer of the Kannada flick Mussanje Maatu, Vikas Jain, says Bluetooth promotions go a long way in creating excitement around a particular movie and ensure easy recall as the visuals remain on the phone.

Chiranjeevi's panel loses MAA election

By donning the new role as politician, Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi may have created ripples in the political circles but has suffered a blow on his home turf with the defeat of his panel in the elections to the Movie Artistes Association (MAA).

The elections to the representative body of the Telugu film industry, conducted biennially, are considered prestigious by the fraternity.

Signalling a thumbs-down for him from the entertainment industry, Chiranjeevi's panel faced a complete rout in the elections.

A long-time associate of Telugu Desam Party and noted actor-producer Murali Mohan was elected the president of MAA, defeating veteran actor Vijaychander, supported by Chiranjeevi.

Murali Mohan, who is also engaged in real estate and film production business, takes over from K Nagendra Babu, younger brother of Chiranjeevi.

Nagendra Babu was actively involved in the formation of the actors new party Praja Rajyam.

None of the members of Chiranjeevi's panel could make to the executive of MAA.

Out of the 400-odd votes cast in the MAA elections, Murali Mohan got 244 while his rival Vijaychander polled 116 votes.

Ahuti Prasad from Murali Mohan panel was elected general secretary with 240 votes, defeating Ayyappa P Sharma of Chiranjeevi panel.

Film star and Praja Rajyam president Chiranjeevi says his party will support the formation of small states if people strongly desire so

Hyderabad: Many of his movies portrayed him as a larger-than-life hero who was always on the side of the small people or the so-called common man but Telugu actor Chiranjeevi, who recently announced the formation of a regional political party, Praja Rajyam, isn’t in favour of long-term populist schemes because these could prove disastrous for the economy.
Chiranjeevi is trying to emulate the late N.T. Rama Rao, founder of the Telugu Desam Party and a former chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, and the late M.G. Ramachandran, founder of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in neighbouring Tamil Nadu. Rao and Ramachandran, who too went on to become chief minister of his state, were, like Chiranjeevi, iconic movie stars with a huge fan following.
While actors have traditionally found the going good in politics in south India, their ability to transform celluloid popularity into votes would appear to be waning a bit. In Tamil Nadu, for instance, actor Vijayakanth, a peer of Chiranjeevi, hasn’t had much of an impact with his party, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam.
Chiranjeevi, however, is adept at speaking the new political language. In an interview, he says his party will strive to achieve a balance between the industrial and agricultural economies; support the formation of small states within existing states if people want this; and be part of a coalition at the federal level to protect and foster the interests of Andhra Pradesh.
Edited excerpts:
Why did you decide to enter politics?
For the past several years, I have been toying with the idea of giving back to society that has offered me so much and made me what I am today. Accordingly, I started contributing to society in a limited way through blood and eye banks, which, however, did not satisfy me much. Meanwhile, the expectations of people from me have grown significantly and they went on mounting pressure on me to take up a larger role towards social service. After years of elaborate deliberations on their appeal, I have finally arrived at a conclusion that serving the public is a life time opportunity and denying it may be a major blunder on my part.
Do you think there is political vacuum in Andhra Pradesh?
Politically correct: Film star and Praja Rajyam president Chiranjeevi. He is impressed by parties in Tamil Nadu that support governments at the Centre and win major industrial projects for their state. Bharath Sai / MintPeople from all walks of life have been looking for a major change and they found in me the sincerity, commitment and ability to bring about that change in their lives. There has been tremendous voluntary response from the public offering support to the idea of my political entry. I hope to live up to their expectations.
Tell us what you will and can do even if you are not elected to power, and what you will do if elected?

don't believe in luck: Bhumika

Bucking the normal trend that married actresses have to sacrifice their career, Bhumika is busier now in Tollywood. Post her marriage, she has been getting meatier roles. After wowing the audiences with Anasuya, she comes up with another film that revolves around her. Mallepuvvu, directed by V Samudra and penned by Ramesh Varma, is the latest from the actress and it is getting released on September 19th. Here she talks about it and much more.

The name Bhumika brings to mind a distinct personality full of self-confidence, thanks to all the different roles that you'd donned on the silver screen. Would you attribute it to your luck, or is it the care you had taken?
I don't believe in luck! It should have been totally because of the care taken in choosing my roles, and in etching such roles.

How did the Mallepuvvu-like tender Bhumika get a chance to work in Mallepuvvu? How did you agree to work with a new hero?
Ramesh Varma came and told me the story, and I liked it instantly and okayed it right away. This story requires a new face for a hero! When I saw Muralikrishna, I thought he was an apt choice for the film.

You've already reached a certain height as an actress. What new lessons or experience did you gain from Mallepuvvu?
Mallepuvvu is a film made with a team which is very talented and creative. The film has superb music by Illayaraja too. Mallepuvvu has the best music and the best story among all my films. Lessons... hmmm, I can't think of any new lessons that I learnt.

Telugu film heroines generally tend to step out of the film glitz after marriage. But you seem to have become busier now.
I came to such a stage with great difficulty. When so many married women still continue their job, why can an actress not do the same? I want to strive hard even after marriage, and I am doing it still.

You've acted with several old and new heroes. Who's

Rajasekhar ready to fight Chiranjeevi

HYDERABAD : Film-actor turned politician Rajasekhar said he is ready to contest against Praja Rajyam founder Chiranjeevi in the next elections, if the Congress high-command decides.
Speaking to newsmen at Vijayawada he made a scathing attack on the Telugu Desam Party and Praja Rajyam and said leaders of both parties were ‘power mongers and destined to plunder the country’.

He lamented that when great actor and leader N.T. Rama Rao was in trouble, none of them cared and the people, who backstabbed Rama Rao, are now trying to take mileage out of his name. He recalled that he was alone was with Rama Rao during his difficult period.

He asked the people not to trust those people, who claim that they will serve them. Referring to Chiranjeevi, he said their ultimate objective was to become Chief Minister and plunder the country.

Key TDP leaders brothers join Chiru party

HYDERABAD : Close relatives of two prominent Telugu Desam Party leaders joined Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam in the presence of mega star here on Tuesday. They are Warangal MP Errabelli Dayakar Rao’s brother E Pradeep Rao and TDP’s deputy leader in the Assembly Yanamala Ramakrishnudu’s brother Y Venkat Rao. Several other leaders from Warangal and East Godavari districts also joined the new party along with them.
Pradeep Rao and Venakt Rao said that they had always been a fan of the actor and impressed by his ideas. Stating that they were joining the new party to serve the people and not aspiring for party tickets to contest in the elections, they indicated that they were ready if the party decides to contest against their borhters.

Namrata turns down a film with Sanjay Dutt

She couldn't be happier even if she tried. Though a cloud recently fell over Namrata Shirodkar's paradise when her mom passed away last week, marriage and motherhood suit the actress, best remembered for her stellar performance as a streetwalker in Mahesh Manjrekar's Vaastav opposite Sanjay Dutt.

"In fact," she laughs from Hyderabad as her 2-year old son Gautam constantly demands her attention.

"Sanju who's a dear friend sent me an offer through Rikkuji (Rakesh Nath, who looked after Namrata and her sister Shilpa's work) for a T Series film. I was tempted. But then I looked at my son, and that moment was over. Really, at this moment I want nothing more than to look after him. And he's quite a handful. On some days, I just want to sit under a shooting umbrella in a sunny outdoor location all over again. But then nothing gives me more happiness than Gautam."

Namrata brightens with maternal pride. "I don't want to say it myself. But Gautam is a very good- looking boy. He has my eyes and Mahesh's smile."

Namrata's husband Mahesh Babu is the reining superstar in Telugu cinema, and she has now started taking interest in his career. "I recently supervised his clothes for a film, and enjoyed the diversion. Whenever his movies need an artiste from Mumbai I tap my old contacts, like recently I contacted Malaika Arora for a song in Mahesh's film."

Mom's going has left a wound within Namrata. "But it's ok. I'm done with the grieving. She didn't have to suffer much. The only lingering sorrow is that my sister Shilpa couldn't be down from London when our mom was gone. Shilpa's passport had been taken away because she has applied for British citizenship. My sister was much closer to mom. Mom accompanied my sister to all her shootings. I made my way on my own."

Now Namrata is planning a trip to London to share her sister's sorrow. "The only problem is, will Gautam be able to take the long flight?"

For now, Mahesh Babu is taking time off from his hectic shooting schedules to take his lovely wife and cute son on a holiday to Singapore before he leaves for a 40-day outdoor in Rajasthan.

Does Namrata miss Mumbai? "I don't miss the city. I miss my friends. Most of my closest friends have come to visit me in Hyderabad. So I feel I'm always linked with Mumbai."

Vijaykanth to turn director with political film

CHENNAI: Tamil actor-turned-politician Vijaykanth is now set to turn director with a film that is said to have many political connotations.

To be titled "Vridhagiri" after the presiding deity of a central Tamil Nadu temple town and railway junction Vriddhachalam, the movie will see the star act as well, sources close to the actor told IANS.

Vijaykanth was elected legislator from Vriddhachalam constituency in 2006 in his debut contest.

Publicists associated with the film said the star would play an honest cop in his directorial debut and would mouth dialogues full of political innuendos.

Born in 1952 in a family with Telugu origins in southern Tamil Nadu, Vijaykanth began his movie career in 1979.

He got noticed when three of his films became hits in 1981 - "Thoorathu Idi Muzhakkam", "Sattam Oru Iruttarai" and "Sigappu Malli".

Nicknamed "Captain" after a character he played in his 100th film, Vijaykanth heads the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK).

While Vijaykanth claims to be the real political heir of former actor-politician M.G. Ramachandran, both Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi of the DMK and AIADMK chief J. Jayalalitha have dismissed him as a political upstart.

Significantly, electoral alliances with Vijaykanth have been frowned upon by smaller parties led by actors Sarath Kumar and Karthick. The proponent of the state's third political front - Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder S. Ramadoss - has also launched a scathing attack on the matinee idol.

Vijaykanth hopes to negate these through the new film, his publicists said.

Chiru training thousands to guard him, handle crowds

HYDERABAD: With film actor Chiranjeevi's camp worried at the reported denial of the state police to allocate additional personnel to the Prajarajyam chief, his close aides are training thousands of young men across the state to get them accustomed to techniques of crowd controlling and policing during his proposed political tour across the state.

At present, the star's younger brother Pavan Kalyan is overseeing all security issues . Nearly 150 'commandos' sporting black uniforms are under his direct supervision for guarding the megastar and his family. Though the film actor has been allotted two personal gunmen for round-the-clock security by the state government , ex-cops in in the actor's camp feel that the actor needs more protection. Nagendra Babu's aides have also started recruiting well-built young men from existing private security agencies for imparting necessary training to upgrade them as personal bodyguards to the megastar.

Sources said that J S Rao, a ticket aspirant from Nalgonda and said to be close to Allu Aravind, is handling the task. Rao, a body builder by profession, has been instrumental in imparting training to these select young men at an apartment complex under his custody in Filmnagar.

At least 350 of them are undergoing a tough training regime from 5.30 am, learning judo and karate. They are also being trained in mob dispersion and rapid action skills to rescue the megastar to safety, in case die-hard fans go on a rampage. Incidentally, most of these young men from Rayalaseema.

Meanwhile, it is reliably learnt that another 3,000 non-Telugu speaking people are also being trained by individual agencies in the neighbouring state away from public glare and under the direct supervision of a member of the Chiranjeevi family.

Purandareswari asked her brothers to re-think

HYDERABAD : Union minister of State for human resource development and N.T. Rama Rao’s daughter D. Purandareswari appealed to her brothers Harikrishna and Balakrishna to reconsider their decision in extending support to the Telugu Desam Party in the ensuing polls.
Speaking to newsmen at Vatlur village of West Godavari district on Tuesday, she was critical of TDP chief N. Chandrababu Naidu. Referring to his poll strategy to rope in NTR family members like Harikrishna, Balakrishna and others, she asked her brothers to reconsider their decision.

Purandareswari recalled how Chadnrababu Naidu had criticised N.T. Rama Rao when the latter had announced that his film actor son Balakrishna would become his successor, stating that NTR was promoting clan politics.

She also recalled how Chadnrababu Naidu, while in the opposition, had flayed NTR family members when they announced their support to the newly-floated Telugu Desam by N.T. Rama Rao, stating that the party would fail to get even five per cent seats in the elections.

As speculation is rife that she might contest either from Rajahmundry or Eluru in the ensuing polls, she said that it was upto the Congress high command to decide from where she should contest the polls

Murali Mohan defends Chiru

Hyderabad, Sep 15 Veteran actor and Telugu Desam leader Murali Mohan, elected president of Movie Artistes' Association (MAA), said Monday that filmdom is the future of political power.

'The future of politics rests on the shoulders of the film industry. Movie artistes not only serve the masses by providing entertainment but also attend to their life's needs as political leaders. Elections in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and distant USA have proved that matinee idols can occupy the highest political positions in a state or nation,' Mohan said.

Reacting to criticism from non-film politicians against celluloid heroes cashing in on their popularity, Mohan defended the industry with strong words.

Vaali: The new villain

Vaali, director Sanjay Ram’s discovery and the villain in his directorial venture Poova Thalaya, is an upcoming actor who minces no words. He is straightforward and speaks his heart out. He is astute and plans his next move very well. Vaali is a unique name for an actor and so is his attitude. He prefers doing villain roles as he considers them a versatile instrument through which he can experiment with his acting skills and project the best of his acting talents. His ambition? To replace the void left by Raghuvaran.

This well-built actor is not even a film old, but has bagged three films (one Telugu and two Tamil) as soon as word about his acting skills and looks spread. He is also doing a very prominent role in Shivamayam, which stars Shaam and Prakashraj.

With his positive and strong attitude, good acting skills, and a penchant to be different from the rest, he is sure a valuable addition to Kollywood. Galatta.com wishes him success and a bright future.

Prakashraj faces the music

Prakashraj is an extremely versatile actor and very much in demand, both in Telugu and Tamil films. However, Prakashraj is notorious for coming late to the sets and also not reporting for shooting for days on end without any prior intimation.

Prakashraj has now turned producer and is now facing the same situation. Trisha walked out of his film after Prakashraj wanted her to give fresh dates even after completing her schedules. Prakashraj complained about her in the Producers’ Council and also tried to coerce her her to give fresh dates. Now Prakashraj has filed a complaint against director Sabha who is making Maa with Sriram and Bhumika in the lead. Sabha narrated the story to Prakashraj first who agreed to produce the film. But due to financial problems, Prakashraj could not start work on the film. An exasperated Sabha then approached another producer and started making the film.

Prakashraj now says that this is unfair and wants the Producers' Council to take action against director Sabha. It remains to be seen whether the all-powerful council will heed this talented actor’s call as he has had previous run-ins with the council itself.

It's NTR family versus Chiranjeevi in AP politics

The film stars in Telugu Desam Party chief Chandrababu Naidu's [Images] family have rallied together to counter the growing political threat from actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi [Images].

At a closed door meeting between Naidu and the four film stars in his family on Sunday, a strategy was chalked out to take on Chiranjeevi in the next elections. The meeting was attended by popular actor Balakrishna, his brother TDP MP and actor Harikrishna and his two film star sons NTR Junior and Kalyan Ram.

Cong, TDP leaders want to join Chiranjeevi

To counter Chiranjeevi's hold over the youth in the state, Naidu asked Balakrishna, NTR Junior and Kalyan Ram to play an active role in consolidating the TDP base among the youth and the women. The three actors are likely to announce their formal entry into politics with the 'Yuva Garjana' (Roar of the Youth) rally at Guntur, to be held after Dussehra.

The TDP has decided to make the rally bigger than the one organised by Chiranjeevi's supporters during his party's launch in Tirupati in August.

"I am ready to any thing and go anywhere for the party which my Tataiah (grand father) had established," NTR Junior was quoted as saying at the meeting. "I am always ready to participate in any programme".

Political couple quits TDP for Chiranjeevi

The meeting discussed the changing political situation in the state and the threat posed by Chiranjeevi's party Praja Rajyam. Other members of N T Ramarao's family will also attend the rally to send a clear message to the masses, specially the fans of NTR, that Naidu had the support of the entire family.

After the rally, the film stars will visit different parts of the state to invoke the name and charisma of the late leader, who was deserted by Naidu and all his children in 1995 and died a lonely death in 1996.

Such meetings will be held in Rajahmundry, Vijaywada, Kurnool, Chittoor and other places and the fan clubs of Balakrishna and NTR Junior will be involved in organising them.

Another TDP leader heads for Chiranjeevi camp

"The NTR family will also be taking up welfare programmes under the banner of NTR Trust and Basava Tarakam Trust to dispel the notion that the family members were approaching the people only for their votes," informed sources said.

Naidu has got the much needed backing from the influential NTR clan at a time when Chiranjeevi's Praja Rajyam is turning out to be a bigger political threat to the TDP than any other party. Several senior TDP leaders have deserted the party and joined Chiranjeevi's Praja Rajyam during the last fortnight.

Former TDP minister joins Chiranjeevi's party

"The Telugu film industry has been clearly divided into two major camps. The fight is now basically between two power families --NTR and Chiranjeevi. If the NTR family has four actors helping the TDP, Chiranjeevi too has three more heroes on his side, his brothers Pavan Kalyan and Nagendra Babu and his nephew Allu Arjun," says a long time expert of the Telugu film industry.

Though Naidu had completely sidelined NTR's children during his nine year long rule, there are several reasons for Naidu and his in-laws to come closer now. Naidu badly needs the support of his family members to return to power and has taken several well calculated measures to patch up with the extended family.

Chiranjeevi-Amar Singh meet raises questions

His son Lokesh married Balakrishna's daughter Brahmini. Naidu also reinstated Harikrishna in a prominent position in the party and nominated him to the Rajya Sabha to earn the much needed good will of the family.

NTR's daughter and Naidu's sister-in-law Purandareshwari, however, continues to oppose him. A minister in the United Progressive Alliance government, Purandareshwari continues to target Naidu for betraying her father in 1995, when Naidu had revolted against NTR and captured power.

Both Purandareshwari and her husband D Venkateshwara Rao are likely to be fielded on Congress tickets for the Lok Sabha and assembly elections respectively.

NTR's son Balakrishna may enter politics

Hyderabad: Popular Telugu actor and N T Rama Rao's son N Balakrishna on Thursday appeared to be gearing up for an imminent political foray, an apparent bid to counter the impact of actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi on the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).

As a precursor to his political entry, Balakrishna inaugurated an 'Annadanam' (mass feeding) programme at the charitable trust here, named after his mother late Basava Tarakam.

Talking to reporters, he said he had come to extend support to his fans and TDP activists who took up charity to help the poor.

CPI(M) love for Chiru’s party lost?

NEW DELHI; Can Andhra Pradesh mega star Chiranjeevi who recently floated a political party, Praja Rajyam, do an NTR? The CPI(M) which has been sending feelers to him for the past few months now thinks that he may not be able to sweep the polls like late NT Rama Rao, who launched the Telugu Desam Party in 1982 and within 11 months, wrested power from the Congress. But Chiru could be a spoiler for the Congress and TDP.

Union minister and NTR’s daughter D Purandeswari also thinks Chiranjeevi may not be able to replicate NTR’s success. To suggestions that the cinestar might storm the polls like her late father NTR, she said the former “could not be compared with NTR as the two have distinctive styles”.

Even after Praja Rajyam spokesperson’s announcement last week that the party plans to contest the polls alone, the CPI(M), looking for potential third front partners, still hopes to have an electoral tie-up with the PR, TDP and TRS to oust the Congress.
The politburo last Sunday took stock of the Andhra Pradesh political scenario and in particular Chiranjeevi’s foray into politics. Sources said a report submitted by the state unit was discussed and decided to keep the question of alliances open.

According to the assessment of the state Marxist leaders, the Congress

Chiru fans turn to Gandhigiri

TIRUPATI: It’s a metamorphosis the Mahatma would smile at. After goondagiri, Chiru’s fans are now moving towards Gandhigiri. This comes as not too long ago ardent fans of the star attacked the actor couple Rajasekhar and Jeevitha as Rajasekhar, in response to a question by the media, said that Chiru lacked the experience to enter politics.

But that was when Chiru was yet to launch Prajarajyam. Now, the party, which purportedly is inspired by the Mahatma, among others has made Gandhigiri its credo. Give bouquets in response to brickbats, even if they are of the verbal variety. Here’s how Prajarajyam activists swept the roads in the temple town of Tirupati in a symbolic protest against TDP Telugu Mahila wing chief R K Roja’s remarks against the matinee idol. In a typical Gandhigiri fashion, they offered flowers to the photograph of the film actor-turned TDP activist.

“Henceforth, we would offer bouquets to her whenever she visits the district,” a Prajarajyam leader said. The trigger to the floral response? Addressing mediapersons after the party’s SC Cell meeting here on Monday evening, Roja said Chiranjeevi is a novice in politics whereas she is a known face not only in Andhra Pradesh, but also in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka as an actor as well as a politician.

The firebrand actor, who made serious allegations against the Prajarajyam chief a couple of days ago, once again spit fire at Chiranjeevi saying films and politics are two different fields. “We might have acted in films, but in politics we belong to two different parties and we are rivals,” she thundered.

Denouncing the Prajarajyam chief’s comments against the Congress and the TDP, Roja said it would be better for Chiranjeevi to be clear on his party’s policies and agenda instead of throwing mud at other parties.

On the protests by the Prajarajyam workers over her remarks against Chiranjeevi, she said: “Criticisms and counter-attacks are part and parcel of politics. Prajarajyam claims it follows the Gandhian way, but why should its workers stage protests?” she questioned. But who can deny that the roja (rose) offered to her photo and the promise to offer bouquets when she comes visiting by Prajarajyam’s activists are Gandhian enough
Padmabushan Megastar Chiranjeevi now adds one more honor to his long list - honorable Doctorate. Andhra University will be awarding the Doctorate and presentation will be done on 6th November 6.
The entire film industry has congratulated Chiranjeevi on his achievement. On this very day, Infosys employees gathered at Chiranjeevi Blood Bank to donate blood and they got the opportunity to get photos with Chiranjeevi. Media also tried to touch base with Chiru on his doctorate and the opportunity came at Bllod Back itself.

Chiranjeevi confessed that 2006 has been a memorable year for him. "I am not even wondering if they are giving me Doctorate for my social services or for cine contributions. Irrespective of the cause, this belongs to you.I have not done anything with awards in mind but these kind of honors give me more push to strive hard and do more work", said Chiranjeevi. Answering to a question about how he should be referred from today onwards, he said, "Even my family members asked me the same. When the honors are coming one after the other, they dont know how I should be referred to any more. How many ever honors I get it is all because of you and I would always be 'Mee Chiranjevi'", said Chiranjeevi.

Chiranjeevi also talked about the remake of Lageraho Munnabhai. "I asw the film and I loved it. In fact, I would love to do the film in Telugu. However the producers bought the remake rights for an astronomical amount which is not healthy for the industry and that is what I am considering now. Even the producers are also pondering over the same. They are planning on how they want to execute this project. They have to decide how much they are expecting on Telugu industry and the equations would change accordingly.

" Chiranjeevi also elaborated his social awareness programs. In addition to blood bank and eye bank, Chiranjeevi is working vigorously on AIDS awareness program. Also, he is planning on drinking water program too. He is now one of the directors of Nandi Foundation and he is always planning to promote health awareness programs through his projects. He also pushed aside any talk on his entrance into politics. "I wont be involved either directly or indirectly in politics", confirmed Chiranjeevi. This event is also attended by Pawan Kalyan, Srikanth, Allu Arjun and others
